ZOOM!® Teeth Whitening in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Have you ever wished that your teeth could be made whiter and brighter? Years of yellowing and stains caused by food, red wine, and tobacco are usually to blame for teeth that appear aged and dull. Fortunately, years of staining can be reversed in just 45 minutes with the ZOOM!® teeth whitening system. Our Philadelphia-area patients tell us that they often get compliments on their newly sparkling smiles, sometimes even from complete strangers!

The ZOOM!® 2 Teeth Whitening Procedure

As one of the most innovative dentists in his field, Dr. Kravitz is always seeking out equipment and techniques that offer his patients the utmost in convenience and efficiency. To that end, he has recently introduced the next generation of ZOOM!® teeth whitening into his Philadelphia practice. Called ZOOM!® 2, it is superior to older ZOOM!® technology in that it requires a shorter treatment time; indeed, by choosing to have Dr. Kravitz perform their ZOOM!® procedure, Pennsylvania patients can whiten their teeth up to eight shades in about 45 minutes.

To prepare your mouth for the ZOOM!® 2 procedure, Pennsylvania dentist Robert Kravitz applies a pH balanced hydrogen peroxide gel to the surface of your teeth, taking care to avoid the gum tissue. Then, he positions the ZOOM!® 2 light over your mouth; over the next 45 minutes, the light will activate the hydrogen peroxide, releasing oxygen that works to bleach stains without damaging tooth enamel.

During your ZOOM!® teeth whitening procedure, our staff will make sure that you are comfortable and relaxed by offering you a neck cushion, warm blanket, and a selection of music to listen to. To complete the ZOOM!® 2 procedure, a five-minute fluoride treatment will be administered, which will reduce the sensitivity to cold that some people feel in their teeth for a few days following ZOOM!® teeth whitening.

Who Is A Good Candidate For ZOOM!® Teeth Whitening?

Nearly anyone who wants a whiter, more dazzling smile can benefit from the ZOOM!® 2 teeth whitening system. However, there are certain people who should discuss with Dr. Kravitz possible alternatives to the ZOOM!® 2 procedure, including those who are sensitive to light and patients currently undergoing photochemotherapy. Also, women who are pregnant or nursing should not use any teeth whitening system, including ZOOM!® 2.

Residents of Pennsylvania and the rest of the Delaware Valley who are interested in brightening their smiles painlessly and quickly should consider the ZOOM!® 2 teeth whitening system, available at the Philadelphia office of Dr. Robert Kravitz. Contact us today to schedule a consultation.

Dental Implants in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

If you are missing one or more teeth, you have probably experienced the disadvantages of having an incomplete smile, including self-consciousness, difficulty in biting and chewing, or even the shifting of remaining teeth. Dental implants from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania doctor Robert Kravitz are an excellent tooth replacement option for both medical and aesthetic reasons.

Advantages of Dental Implants

Natural teeth are rooted into the jawbone, which lends strength and stability to both the teeth and the jaw. When teeth are lost, either through disease or injury, the jawbone will start to shrink, causing a sunken appearance in the face. Unlike bridges or dentures, dental implants can help Dr. Kravitz’s Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware patients to preserve as much jawbone structure as possible, thereby maintaining the health of their remaining natural teeth.

Many people with removable dentures often report that they cannot effectively bite and chew hard or crunchy foods such as apples, corn on the cob, or crackers. Even though dentures fit well when they are first worn, over time the shrinkage of the jawbone causes dentures to fit more loosely, making them far more liable to slip while eating or talking. Poor fit also contributes to sore, exposed gums. Because dental implants help to maintain jaw structure, they remain perfectly stable over time. Dental implants can help a person to bite and chew just as they did when they had a full complement of teeth. In fact, after their dental implants have been placed, our Philadelphia area patients often forget they have them at all.

The Dental Implant Procedure

Dr. Robert Kravitz will refer you to an excellent oral surgeon or periodontist, who will implant titanium posts into your jaw; these posts will serve as roots to which artificial tooth crowns will later be attached. The post incisions are given up to six months to heal, during which time the posts will have been integrated into the surrounding bone tissue. During this time, Dr. Kravitz will take precise measurements for your replacement teeth, taking into consideration the size and color of the surrounding teeth.

When the post incisions are fully healed, Dr. Kravitz will attach your new replacement teeth. Once affixed, your dental implants will function much like your natural teeth. To ensure that your mouth remains healthy after receiving dental implants, all of our Pennsylvania implant recipients are asked to schedule more frequent cleanings and checkups.

If you’d like to learn more about dental implants, the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania staff at the office of Dr. Robert Kravitz can schedule you for a consultation. You’ll be on your way to a full set of beautiful, functional teeth in no time.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is an excellent option for patients who have minor dental imperfections, including small gaps between teeth and chipped or cracked teeth. Depending on the extent of required repairs, Dr. Kravitz can usually bond teeth in a single office visit.

The process begins with Dr. Kravitz gently abrading the surfaces of the teeth to be bonded. He then applies the composite material, layer by layer, to the area in need of repair. Dr. Kravitz can sculpt and shape this material to effectively close gaps and create a more pleasing contour. After the bonded teeth are exposed to a high-intensity curing light, Dr. Kravitz will polish them until their luster resembles that of the surrounding teeth.

Porcelain veneers

If your smile is marred by numerous damaged or stained teeth, porcelain veneers may be the ideal solution for you. Veneers are thin shells of color-matched porcelain that slide over the front surfaces of your teeth and are effective for adjusting the shape, size, and overall appearance of the teeth. Read more about porcelain veneers from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania dentist Robert Kravitz.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns, or caps, are designed to cover the entire tooth in order to reinforce their structure and to protect them from future harm. For example, if a cavity has damaged a tooth severely enough to weaken it, a crown will not only fill the hole and cover the tooth, but will also strengthen the tooth and prevent further decay. Depending on the intended location, crowns used by Dr. Robert Kravitz may be made of either ceramic or porcelain fused to metal; both kinds of crowns are carefully crafted to match the color of the surrounding teeth as closely as possible. Dr. Kravitz may suggest ZOOM!® 2 teeth whitening to his Philadelphia-area patients at this time, as crowns are impervious to the effects of the whitening procedure. If the patient decides to undergo teeth whitening at a later point, the crown will no longer match the surrounding natural teeth.

To ensure a tight fit and promote a strong bond, Dr. Kravitz will remove a small amount of enamel from the tooth to be crowned. He will then take a mold of the area, which will be sent to a leading dental lab along with detailed instructions on color and composition. When the crown is complete, the patient will return to the office and Dr. Kravitz will permanently attach the crown to the damaged tooth with bonding cement. With proper care, a dental crown can be expected to provide years of protection and strength. Bridges

Dental bridges provide strong, secure replacements for missing teeth and can even be supported by dental implants. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, dentist Robert Kravitz often recommends fixed bridges as a way of replacing a missing tooth in cases where dental implants are not practical or possible, such as when a patient has insufficient bone mass to support an implant post.

A bridge is simply an artificial tooth that is supported by a crown on either side of the gap where a tooth is missing. Much like dental implants, bridges are beneficial for a number of reasons. The most apparent is the aesthetic improvement to a person’s appearance. Also, chewing and biting capabilities that were lessened after the tooth loss are restored. Finally, from a dental point of view, it is important to keep the teeth from shifting, as they would if the gap was left open. If you are missing one or more of your natural teeth, Dr. Kravitz can determine the best method of replacing them. Residents of the Delaware Valley are urged to contact his Pennsylvania dentistry practice today to schedule a consultation.

Tooth Colored Fillings

In the past, metal fillings were the only way to repair cavities. Now, Dr. Kravitz is able to offer fillings made from a resilient tooth colored material, which can be used for new fillings as well as to replace older metal fillings.

Aside from the obvious aesthetic benefit, tooth colored fillings are far more durable than amalgam fillings because they are able to truly bond to the tooth, reducing the chance of separation. Depending on their location and the patient’s hygiene habits, large fillings can be expected to last for many years, while smaller fillings can potentially last a lifetime.

Smile Makeover

Oftentimes, the cause of jaw, head, and neck pain is a misaligned bite pattern. In this situation, the teeth are either meeting with too much force or at the wrong points all together. As a result, such patients have to force their jaws into uncomfortable positions to complete activities such as chewing, biting, or even talking. Because they use their mouths and teeth every day for so many functions, many people do not realize that they are causing the pain and discomfort they are feeling. In addition to the pain caused, long-term tooth enamel damage is likely.

A smile makeover is often equal parts form and function. The primary purpose of a smile makeover is to allow the teeth to come together in a more natural way, reducing pain and tension caused by a few teeth taking the brunt of the entire jaw’s force. However, many patients also ask Dr. Kravitz to include other procedures in their smile makeover procedure, including porcelain veneers and ZOOM!® 2 teeth whitening.

To determine the optimal bite for a patient, Dr. Kravitz may use a number of diagnostic tests to find the current trouble spots, including x-rays or models of the patient’s teeth. The makeover itself will most likely involve a combination of such therapies as enamel reshaping, porcelain crowns, and dental bonding. Once the teeth meet together properly, much of the patient’s previous pain disappears.

TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) Treatment

If you experience frequent tension headaches, or have developed a painful popping or clicking sensation in your jaw, you may be suffering from a TMJ disorder. The TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, is located just in front of your ear where your lower jaw connects to your skull. In healthy people, this joint is cushioned by a disk of cartilage that allows the joint to move smoothly. However, there are many conditions under which this cartilage can become stressed and damaged, including the following:

  • Grinding or clenching of teeth
  • Excessive gum chewing
  • Stress
  • Improper bite
  • Arthritis development

Patients who come to Dr. Robert Kravitz with TMJ problems often report headaches, clicking noises in their jaw, and difficulty with either opening or closing their mouths fully. If you suffer from any of these symptoms, Dr. Kravitz can provide you with a thorough examination of your TMJ and teeth. He may study your bite pattern to determine if the stress on the jaw is being caused by an improper bite. Once the cause of the pain is determined, Dr. Kravitz can suggest a course of treatment; the most common methods of dental TMJ therapy are smile makeovers and nightguards.

Nightguards

Most people who clench or grind their teeth do not realize that they are doing so for quite some time, simply because they only do it while they are asleep. Some indications that you grind or clench your teeth might include tooth tenderness or unexplained tension headaches. In addition to the pain caused by this behavior, teeth grinding can also lead to worn teeth surfaces, inviting decay and injury; for this reason, it is important that grinding and clenching be dealt with in a timely manner.

One of the most simple and successful methods of treating nighttime clenching is the prescription of a nightguard, which is a comfortable and generally unobtrusive appliance that is worn in the mouth at night. Intended to prevent the teeth from touching, there are several different kinds of nightguards are available; Dr. Kravitz will recommend the one that most effectively remedies your particular behavior. If you think you clench your teeth, or if a partner has told you that you grind your teeth at night, please contact the general dentistry practice of Dr. Robert Kravitz to discuss your treatment options.

General Dentistry

Dr. Kravitz and his staff would much rather help you to preserve a healthy, natural smile than have to reconstruct it through cosmetic solutions such as teeth whitening and dental implants. To that end, we are committed to providing thorough preventive care, as well as educating each of our patients in good oral hygiene. Dr. Kravitz uses some of the most contemporary diagnostic and treatment tools available, all of which are designed to make the dental experience as comfortable and efficient as possible.

Periodontal Care

In addition to professional cleanings that include scaling and root planing, our staff treats periodontal (gum) disease with Arestin®, a highly effective antibiotic therapy that helps to reduce the depth of pockets caused by the gum disease. Once we are able to reduce the size of these pockets, which harbor dangerous bacteria, the gums are more likely to heal; as a result, future periodontal surgery is rendered unnecessary.

DIAGNOdent Laser Cavity Detection

Every dentist is highly trained to identify cavities on sight. However, the DIAGNOdent laser allows Dr. Kravitz to detect small cavities far sooner than would be otherwise possible. This allows for preventive action and means that any necessary fillings will be small, durable, and less painful.

Laughing Gas

Many of our Delaware Valley patients are wary of dental visits, often due to past experiences that were painful or complicated. Dr. Kravitz can discuss with you the possibility of sedation using nitrous oxide, perhaps better known as laughing gas. Though you will be conscious throughout the procedure, you will feel completely relaxed. If you are timid about visiting the dentist, Dr. Kravitz will help you find a solution with which you are comfortable. Remember, it is far more painful to put off important dental work than it is to take care of it quickly!

Ultrasonic Treatments

Many of our patients tell us that the worst thing about past visits to other dentists was the “scraping” sensation during tartar removal. Now, there is a revolutionary alternative to manual tartar removal. Using a small wand that emits ultrasonic sound, our staff members can easily and gently remove cavity-inducing tartar without any scraping. The tartar simply falls away from the tooth – it’s that easy!

No matter what your dentistry needs, from preventive care to porcelain veneers, dental implants and ZOOM!® 2 teeth whitening, the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania staff at Dr. Robert Kravitz’s office wants to help you achieve a healthy, beautiful smile. We strive to bring you the latest in technology and the most patient-friendly techniques and environment. If you are interested in improving the appearance and strength of your teeth, please contact the office of Dr. Robert Kravitz today to arrange a consultation.
